This podcast is a two parter because director Sheldon Epps’ rise in American theater over a 30+ year requires two sessions! His memoir, My Own Directions: A Black Man's Journey in the American Theatre chronicles that journey. Sheldon was raised by parents, his dad a highly respected minister, who made him believe that he could accomplish anything his mind set out to do. When he graduated from an esteemed university, he met up with another reality, racism in the american theater. My Own Directions tells that story that includes significant resistance to his appointment as Artistic Director of the Emmy Award winning Pasadena Playhouse, a position he led for 20+ years.
